About

I am an advocate for clear, concept-driven work with an emphasis on the integration of building, landscape & construction technology.  I have led the design of projects of a wide range of scales and budgets— from small houses, commercial interiors to large $100M+ institutional and cultural projects.

The common thread in the work is a process rooted in empathy and projects that build community with a commitment to design excellence.

Robert Thomas, design director and lead designer at Vines Architecture. Was the lead designer of many of the firms' notable projects including the Durham Main Library, the Henrietta Lacks Building and the NCA&T Student Center.

Throughout my 25 year career,   I have served as a design principal, lead designer and architect on projects of a wide range of scales, typologies, and budgets that have been consistently recognized for Design Excellence and technical execution, with over 60 Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects, NOMA and the International Interior Design Association. These projects range in scope and scale from a small commercial interior upfit, single family houses and  $100M+ institutional projects.

Most recently, I was a Principal and Director of Design @ Vines Architecture, where I led the overall design direction for the 2024 AIA Firm Award winning studio. I served as  a hands-on designer on many of the firm’s award-winning institutional projects, including the Durham Main Library (North Carolina Public Building of the Year) , MLK Library, The NC Civil War History Center / Museum and the Henrietta Lacks Building at Johns Hopkins University.

From 2004-2012 I was a  Principal @ Hobgood Architects, where I worked closely with the noted modernist and educator, Kenneth Hobgood, FAIA.  I worked there for 8 years as both a designer, project architect and project manager on many of the firm’s noteworthy projects, including the Hong Kong Design Institute, a library in Prague,  several award winning modern houses, a 4-star French restaurant and a modern clothing boutique.

In 2018, I was awarded the Kamphoefner Prize by the AIA and the Architecture Foundation of NC for my body of work. The Prize is one of the most prestigious awards for modern design in North Carolina and is presented to an architect whose “work has demonstrated a consistent integrity and devotion to furthering the development of the modern movement in architecture.”

My work has been published and exhibited nationally and internationally.  In 2022, I was invited to participate in group exhibition at the Venice Biennale in Italy; a show organized by Peter Mackeith at the E Fay Jones school of architecture, recognizing many of the most important designers working in the Southern United States. Design work that I have led is currently being exhibited at the National Building Museum in D.C.

In addition to my experience in practice, I am passionate about teaching and mentoring, having served as a Professor in Practice at the NCSU College of Design from 2004-2015.  I have led a range of courses and studios in the graduate program that have addressed the integration of building and site, applied architectural technology/construction systems as well as the ARC 503 comprehensive design studio.  I have lectured, served as a studio critic and American Institute of Architects awards juror throughout the US.

I believe that ‘real’ places— ones that move us closer to a greater understanding of one another and the world around us— are more important than ever..
